Savannah - 1 Month (late)

(I just came across this and realized I never posted it...oops.  She just turned two months old but here is her one month post.  I will get the two month one out much sooner...promise!)

Our sweet Savannah just turned a month old - quite possibly the fastest month of my life.  With the addition of each new child, life just goes by faster and faster - I hate it.  But I love her and it has been so fun getting to know this little person.

(MANY more details are below for those that like that sort of thing...for those that don't, just enjoy the pictures.)
People ask a lot if she looks like one of her sisters - yes and no.  They all look pretty different to me but I would say that if anyone she looks a little more like Abbie - with way less hair (Abbie had a lot when she was born and never lost it like either of the other girls.)  She has the dark, smokey blue eyes like Abbie did (Abbie's are now green) and the long, skinny legs like Abbie.  But she definitely has her own look - just the way God made her.

It might be a little dangerous that my babies just keep getting easier and easier.  Until now, I couldn't have imagined an easier baby than Olivia, but Savannah might just be proving to me that it's possible.  She sleeps a lot.  Her longest stretch has been about 5 hours but otherwise she is pretty predictable, needing to eat every 3.  She even sleeps really well in her car seat which is great since she is my little tag-a-long, being toted from place to place, dropping off and picking up her sisters, running errands, etc.  If she needs to eat while we are out and about I just stop somewhere and feed her in the van - yet one more reason why I love the extra space of our mini van.  And at the risk of some criticism I will say that I am very strongly considering letting her become a tummy sleeper (Olivia also slept on her tummy.)  She sleeps SO good this way and has fairly good head control so I don't worry about her getting stuck face down.  So far she sleeps pretty good on her back though too - just not as long, so we'll see.  I have been napping her on her tummy (when I am awake to keep my eye on her) and sleeping her on her back at night.

She is a great eater.  She is also slightly tongue tied, like Olivia was/is, but it hasn't caused any issue with her eating.  She is somewhat of a stubborn burper though.  She doesn't like to burp in the middle of her feeding, when I switch sides, but we have learned the hard way a few times that she really does need to.  She doesn't spit up much but has had a few projectile spit up episodes when we haven't been able to get a burp out of her.  When she does get the burp out, everyone around knows it - she's not very polite quite yet.  She was a little gassy the first few weeks and would get pretty upset when her little tummy hurt but that seems to have improved and we really haven't had too many issues with it anymore.  We have tried giving her a bottle a few times (since she will need to be a pro by the time I go back to work in November) and she has taken them like it wasn't any big deal.  Abbie got to feed her her first one and was pretty excited to have that honor.

Best, and most commented on, feature:  Chubby cheeks!  She even started smiling this week and the chub makes it all the better.
2nd best feature:  Loves to snuggle!  We all enjoy this but Daddy especially.
Hair:  Dark brown - losing it on top and has quite the receding hair line =)
Eyes:  Dark blue
Ears:  Really small
Fingers and Toes:  Long and kissable
Skin:  Still in that newborn peeling phase
Weight: 11ish lbs (which means she gained 3 since she was born)
Height:  Didn't even try to measure

Bottle:  No problem
Pacifier:  Likes it but is still getting it figured out (this is new territory for us as the older two never took one.)
Bath time:  LOVE it!
Diapers:  Quickly went from newborn to size 1, and now in size 2.  I've been peed on...a lot.

Events from her first month:
- Went camping for the first time at 8 days old
- Big sister Olivia turned 3!
- Went disc golfing when Uncle Dusty, Aunt Melodee, and cousins Samuel and Eliza came to visit.
- Went on her first hike with Mommy and big sisters on the Woodpecker Trail out at the Coralville Reservoir.
- Had her first photo shoot with our friend Andrea, who wanted to expand her portfolio a little bit.  I won't post all of them here since I put a lot up on facebook but this is one of my favorites.

Overall the first month has gone really well.  I am still figuring out how much I can get done during each day...realistically.  Peter and I are both tired but it is all so worth it.  We aren't just adjusting to a newborn, but to a whole new routine in general with Abbie in Kindergarten now .  Olivia is the big girl at home for most of the day.  Her and I are both getting used to that and I think Abbie felt like she was missing out at first, but thankfully Kindergarten is going really well for her and she is having a great time.  She loves to hold Savannah and frequently asks how she can help me when she is home - so sweet of her.  Olivia does great with Savannah too but needs a little more assistance, although she doesn't want it.  I learned my lesson when Savannah was only a week old.  I had placed her in her bouncy seat and gone upstairs to get her some clothes.  When I cam back down, Olivia had gotten her out of her seat and had her laying on the floor, changing her diaper.  Thankfully she was OK (wasn't even crying) but Olivia wants to be such a good helper, and for the most part she is, but we just have to keep a close eye on her.

We are so thankful for a happy, healthy baby and for all the joy she has brought in such a short time already. What a privilege it is to get to raise her and keep discovering who God has made her to be.  One of the greatest gifts in life.

Fall Family Fun

We finally made it out to the apple orchard...no, not to get apples since we are WAY too late for that.  But since Halloween is upon us this week, and we didn't have a pumpkin, we thought we better get one.  I was all ambitious thinking we needed three - one for each of the girls.  But then I realized that my husband was wise in only letting us pick one this year since he and I will probably be doing most of the work ourselves - which really means HE will be doing most of the work since Savannah will need my attention at some point during the carving =).  Maybe we'll shoot for three next year.  So anyway, we went last evening and had a lovely time together.  It was a beautiful, crisp, fall evening.  We had apple cider donuts, a nice little tractor ride and then picked out a pumpkin at the end to bring home.  We still need to come to some sort of a consensus as to what we are going to carve into it - ideas???

There were several stops along the way where the driver would pretend to be "stuck" in the muddy, swampy water that covered the road.  Olivia got a little concerned at one point and asked if there were any dragons in the water =).  She held my arm like this for the entire ride too.  Sweet girl.

And just because we can't take pictures without being silly...

It was a beautiful evening and we are thankful to have made it out to the orchard before they closed for the season - maybe we'll get out early enough for apples next year too =)

Political Post...sort of

I am not going to discuss politics - not my nature.  Election season makes me crazy.  Don't get me wrong, I strongly agree in voting and I ALWAYS cast my vote but the whole thing is just so frustrating.  My friend Annie just posted this article on her blog and it resonated what is in my heart so I want to pass it along.

Messy Day

*Poo Disclaimer:  If you don't want to read about my poopy baby then do not continue.*

So I set Savannah down in her bouncy seat to go clean up the bowl of cereal that Olivia half spilled onto the floor (and onto herself) and just after I finished cleaning that up, I picked up Savannah only to find this...

the other side looked even worse...sigh!

There was just no way of getting it over her body and head without even more of a disaster...so I cut it off and threw it in the trash.  I've never done that before, but today it just had to be done.

She was pretty thrilled though.  It's been a messy day around here.  I'm going to go take a shower.
(Sorry for the blurry picture - she wasn't smiling in the other one I took so I chose blurry over a frowny face.)

Madison in the Fall

Abbie didn't have school this past Thursday or Friday so we decided to take a long weekend and visit some family in Madison, WI.  As far as I'm concerned I never need to visit that city in any other season.  It is SO beautiful in autumn!!!  We stayed with Peter's brother Ian and his wife Laura and were able to visit several of Peter's Aunts, Uncles and cousins while we were there as well.

(I was very sporadic in my picture taking - we went to the zoo while we were there and most of the pictures are from our time there.)

We stopped in Dubuque to eat on the way there.  We saw a sign for McDonalds and the one we stopped at just happened to have a play-place.  The relaxed, laid back mom in me loves that my girls get so excited about this.  The overprotective, germophobe mom in me tried not to look or even think about it while they were playing on it (so GROSS!)  Our only mishap was Abbie spilling chocolate milk all over her skirt.

We visited Peter's Aunt Trel on Friday and the girls had a lot of fun playing in the leaves...I took no other pictures while we were there...sigh!

Friday afternoon, after our lunch visit to Aunt Trel's, we headed over to the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison.  The coolest thing is that it is FREE - year round!  It was a REALLY chilly day and I thought I had packed for the weather but I didn't do an adequate job...at all.  We made a quick stop at Target to buy a hat for Savannah and Olivia (Abbie just happened to bring hers.)  The smallest baby hat I could find was 12-18 months - so she was swimming in it but it did the job and she was still as cute as ever...

We must have been in Madison at their peak time for fall color.  It seriously felt like the air was glowing as we walked through the zoo - the trees were SO beautiful!

We heard this guy as soon as we walked in the zoo!  I didn't get my camera out in time to take a video but it was pretty cool.

I don't think I had ever seen a giraffe sitting all bent up like this before.  It looked so small.

Olivia really wanted to ride the camel.

I thought the flamingos were just beautiful.

Looking for the otters...

...found one.

...and the other one.

This guy was hilarious.  We all voted him our favorite animal at the zoo.  He swam around doing back flips for a good 5 minutes as soon as a bunch of people walked up to the glass.  I think he was a little show-off.

This guy might have been our second favorite.  What a cute and lazy grizzly bear!

Another show-off!

There was a fun area for kids to play in...

...and adult children too =) (Top:  Peter's brother Ian, Bottom:  Peter)

I don't know if I have ever seen trees so bright and vibrant as I did this past weekend.

Snuggle time with Aunt Laura when we got home from the zoo.

I wish the time-stamp showed up on these next two pictures.  I only took them to document all of my children sleeping at the same time...for a long time!  It was wonderful!

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures while we were with family.  We had a nice meal together Saturday evening and it was good to catch up with some of Peter's Aunts, Uncles and cousins and introduce them to Savannah.  We had a beautiful drive home as well and are now just playing catch up (I feel like it is going to take me all week.)

(Getting ready to cross the Mississippi on our way home - the girls love going over big bridges like this!)

A big thank you to our family and a big thank you to Peter who took a couple of days off so we could have a long weekend together!
